It's not the size of the dog in the fight that matters...

Generosity of Life
“It’s true; life is really generous to those who pursue their destiny” (Coelho 160) In The Alchemist, Santiago, a young shepherd boy, leaves his home in Andalusia, Spain, to pursue his destiny. Santiago had a recurring dream about a treasure at the Great Pyramids. After receiving some help from King Melchizedek, he makes the decision of leaving his sheep and home in search of his treasure in Egypt. During his journey, he meets some significant individuals who assist him on his journey. Santiago learns from the people he met and uses his knowledge to overcomes obstacles, and furthermore find true love. He succeeds in overcoming the challenges along the way and becomes enlightened. Santiago, overwhelmed by the generosity of life, thanks God from his the bottom of his heart for the treasure he has been given. By being direct, curious and faithful, Santiago embarks on a journey seeking his destiny and true love.
Santiago’s directness allows him to have his suggestions and opinions understood quickly and easily. Before he knows about his destiny, when he is still a young boy, Santiago tells his parents that he wants to be a traveler. His parents are shocked as they expected Santiago to be a priest. His parents tell him that only shepherds travel in their countryside. Santiago is quick to make the choice that he wants to be a shepherd. Santiago proves that he is direct as he can rapidly make big decisions that affect his life. He is swift in getting his outlook understood. During his journey, Santiago also shows that he is direct. For instance, after he saw the unique flight of the two hawks, which was an omen, he reports that there is going to be an attack on the oasis. The tribal chieftains doubt him at first and question him about the omen Santiago saw. He doesn’t bother to explain everything that happened. A brief summary and straight, direct answers to all of the tribal chieftains’ questions convince them to protect the oasis. Santiago’s straightforward manner saved the lives of the civilians in the oasis. Another event that took place in the oasis that provides evidence that Santiago is direct is the dialogue between him and Fatima. “I came to tell you just one thing; I want you to be my wife. I love you.” (91) Santiago again demonstrates how straightforward he is. Marriage and love are big issues and instead of announcing a winding, well-prepared speech like most people would, he says it all in one sentence. He has only met Fatima once but he is able to directly propose to her in a straightforward manner. Santiago’s directness is vital in aiding him to achieve his destiny but it is his curiosity that helps him learn about what he needs to know to succeed.
Santiago gains wisdom and knowledge on his journey because of his curiosity and his willingness to ask and understand. Santiago learns so much because he asks a lot of questions. For example, He asks the Englishman about alchemy and about his books. Santiago wants to understand what is written on the books that the Englishman was reading. He asks the Alchemist about the Soul of The World and the Language of the World. Santiago questions the Alchemist about the ways to penetrate into the Soul of the World, how to speak the Language of the World, and much more questions that lead him into understanding the World and God. Santiago has to question everything that he does not understand, his curiosity helps him gain wisdom and knowledge that are absolutely essential in assisting him to his destiny. Santiago also wants to know about things even though they do not concern him at all. “And you’ve told me nothing along the way, I thought you were going to teach me some of the things you know.” (119,120) in the quote, Santiago is talking about learning to turn lead into gold. He wants to know how to do it even though it is not important to his journey nor is it his destiny to learn it. Santiago also demonstrates his curiosity by always trying to learn from the Soul of The World, and from God. Santiago constantly tries to penetrate into the Soul of The World to learn about it. Santiago seeks to learn from his whereabouts, everything and everyone around him. “I’ve learnt things from the sheep, and I’ve learnt things from crystal. I can learn something from the desert too. It seems old and wise.”(70) This quote shows that Santiago is keen to learn new things. He is able to learn from everything. He was able to learn from animals, he was able to learn from non-living objects, like crystals, and now, he wants to learn from the vast desert. Santiago sees the desert not as an obstacle but as a teacher. His curiosity is the most essential quality that Santiago possesses. As a result, Santiago’s curiosity expands his wisdom and understanding. In addition to his curiosity, Santiago’s faith also guides him to his destiny.
Santiago’s faith in himself and other people guide him to his treasure and destiny. Santiago assures Fatima that he will return to her after he has found his treasure. “I’ll return, just as your father came back to your mother.”(117) Santiago is staying faithful to Fatima even though he needs to move on and find his treasure. He is hesitant to leave Fatima because he feels that Fatima is much more valuable than the treasure he is in search of. Santiago stays faithful to Fatima and returns to her after he finds his treasure and realizes his destiny. Santiago also gives one-tenth of his treasure to the gypsy although she would never know if he found his treasure or not. Santiago proves himself a trustworthy man because he sticks to his promise. He promised the gypsy that he would give her a one-tenth of his treasure for interpreting his recurring dreams. Another piece of evidence that suggests Santiago is faithful is when he is out in the desert. Santiago is faced with challenges and hardships but he stays faithful to his heart. He listens to the advice and stories that his heart tells him about. He befriends his heart to the point that they cannot betray each other. Santiago’s heart speaks to him to provide a stimulus to him, and to provide him with strength. Santiago’s heart accompanies him on the lonely days in the desert. Santiago has learned to trust his heart to help him on his journey. To summarize, Santiago’s faith in himself and other proves to be an important factor in his journey to the Great Pyramids in search of his treasure and destiny.
Santiago traveled from his home in the Andalusian countryside across the African desert to the Great Pyramids of Egypt. The irony is that the treasure he seeks is where he started from, Andalusia, Spain. He thanks god and is grateful to life that is so generous to him. Santiago succeeds in accomplishing his destiny because he is able to gain knowledge through his curiosity, he completes all the challenges and obstacles that he is confronted with, and he remains faithful to himself, other individuals, and God. Santiago has learnt a lot more about life and the Soul of the World, and has turned into a more confident and wise man. Santiago’s journey taught him alchemy and enlightened Santiago. He has become a messenger from God’s soul to his own. The journey to the treasure is more important than the treasure itself. Santiago learned about the Soul of the World and about alchemy. He found true love. He has become a messenger from God’s soul to his own. The things he found and learned on his journey are of far greater value than the treasure. Santiago’s story provides a very important message. As long as we dream, we can, and the generosity of life would benefit us all.

I am a participant in my destiny through determination. Achieving one's destiny requires a lot but determination is the most important trait. When i try something and fail at it, i don't just accept that i can't do it. I keep on doing it, i try again and again until i succeed. I am able to learn from my failures and never make the mistakes again. I have a disadvantage in everthing i do because of my small size, but it doesn't matter to me, i keep on trying until i succeed. After a period of hardship and determination, it finally pays off and success comes. My determination guides me to success. It is a very important trait that i have that helps me achieve my destiny.
